Glass Weight Calculator

Estimate the approximate weight of a rectangular glass pane using its thickness, width, height and quantity. Use the result as an initial guide, then speak to Dunstable Glass when you need advice about glass specification, lifting, delivery or installation.

Estimate the Weight of Flat Glass

Glass can become surprisingly heavy as its area and thickness increase. This calculator gives you a quick estimate for a single pane or a group of identically sized panes, helping you understand the likely handling weight before requesting a quotation.

Enter the full glass dimensions rather than the visible area inside a frame. For an initial enquiry, approximate measurements are useful, but manufacturing sizes and safety requirements should always be confirmed before glass is ordered.

Glass Weight Calculator

Enter the glass dimensions, thickness and quantity to estimate the total weight.

Important: This calculator provides an approximate weight using a standard glass density of 2,500 kg/m³. For double-glazed units, enter the combined thickness of the glass panes only, not the spacer cavity. Allow for fittings, frames, interlayers and manufacturing tolerances when planning lifting or installation work.

How to Use the Glass Weight Calculator

1. Enter the Glass Size

Add the full width and height of the pane. Millimetres are selected by default, although centimetres, metres, inches and feet can also be used.

2. Add the Thickness

Enter the thickness of the glass itself. For a sealed unit, add the thicknesses of the individual panes but do not include the spacer cavity.

3. Calculate the Weight

Select the number of panes and calculate. The result shows the estimated weight per pane, total weight and combined glass area.

Why Glass Weight Matters

The weight of a pane affects how it should be transported, lifted, supported and installed. A relatively modest increase in thickness or dimensions can add a considerable amount of weight, particularly with large mirrors, table tops, shower screens, balustrade panels and commercial glazing.

The calculator uses an approximate standard glass density of 2,500 kg per cubic metre. It is useful for early planning, but it does not assess whether a glass specification is suitable for the intended application.

Frames, fittings, spacer bars, resin interlayers, decorative elements and hardware can increase the finished weight. Laminated products can also vary according to the number and thickness of their glass layers and interlayers.

What the Estimate Includes

The calculation is based on rectangular flat glass. It uses the width, height, glass thickness and quantity to estimate the weight of the glass material.

It can be used as an initial guide for products such as:

  • Replacement window panes
  • Mirrors and mirrored wall panels
  • Glass shelves and table tops
  • Shower screens and bath screens
  • Splashbacks and furniture glass
  • Balustrade and staircase panels

What the Estimate Does Not Confirm

A weight result does not confirm that a particular thickness or glass type is safe for your project. Pane size, edge support, holes, cut-outs, fixings, impact risk and the installation location must also be assessed.

The figure does not include frames, hinges, clamps, channels, handles, seals, spacers or other components. It should not be used as the sole basis for manual-handling, lifting-equipment or structural calculations.
